The conference will explore aspects of the interaction and tension between the theological and Sufi trends and traditions in Islamic history, including the medieval and modern periods - a subject that has not yet received the scholarly attention it deserves. 'Theology' here corresponds mainly, but not exclusively, to the traditional inquiry into 'the principles of religion' (usul al-din), including dogmatic and dialectical trends.
